How I scope a freelance project in one call
The questions I ask in a first call to turn a vague idea into a clear proposal, timeline and budget.
- Freelancing
- Process
Most projects go wrong before a single line of code is written. The brief is vague, the budget is a guess and nobody has agreed what "done" means. A good first call fixes all three.
Start with the outcome
I always open with one question: what will be different for your business when this is finished? The answer tells me what to prioritise and what can wait.
Agree on the constraints
Timeline, budget and who makes decisions. Getting these on the table early saves weeks of back-and-forth later.
Leave with next steps
Every call ends with a written summary and a proposal within two working days, so the client always knows what happens next.
